Before: Beige bedroom with gray furniture

In renovations and redos, it's often the common spaces that get the most attention, like the living room and kitchen. It makes sense, since those are the spaces most people will see. But that doesn't mean that you can't have beautiful personal spaces, too. Aminah Chung of Neatly Living moved into her home in 2016, and while most of her energy had gone into the living spaces the main bedroom sat neglected.

"Everything about this space screamed BASIC!" Aminah says. "It was essentially four walls painted beige with no interest or personality." And since it wasn't exactly a dreamy escape, it was hard to want to spend time in there. "Did you notice the collage photo frames still contained the stock images?!" Aminah says. "Our master bedroom was very uninspiring!"

"We decided it was time to update our master bedroom because my husband and I had learned so much about DIYs and home design and it was embarrassing that our master bedroom did not reflect any of the knowledge or growth we'd been experiencing," Aminah says. They wanted to turn the beige box into a place they could retreat to at the end of the day and just unwind.

Aminah knew that the end result needed to include places to sit and relax beyond just the bed. While the rocker had been a convenient place for nighttime feedings of their youngest child, a year-plus later it was time for a change-up.

Aminah and her husband tackled the redo together as part of the One Room Challenge, transforming their bedroom over eight weeks. One major change: an accent wall behind the bed, created with pre-primed MDF shiplap that Aminah and her husband painted dramatic black (Sherwin-Williams' Iron Ore). A wood-toned ledge above the bed chicly displays a collection of photos—real, non-stock ones this time! The couple also added trim to the windows, painted the same black color.

In the corner where the old rocker used to be, the couple added a sleek and modern sofa along with cubby shelving from IKEA on the wall. The whimsical wood-and-white blanket ladder was a DIY project.

On the TV wall, Aminah and her husband created a cool graphic accent wall featuring three colors: the black from the opposite accent wall (Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore), a light, creamy color (Sherwin-Williams' Agreeable Gray), and a tan color on the bottom (Sherwin-Williams' Dromedary Camel).

The total cost for the bedroom—including all the paint, materials, and furniture—was about $1,500. It's money well spent in Aminah's eyes: "I'm OBSESSED with the end result of our master bedroom!" she says. "I spend more time in this space than I ever did before. If I could go back in time, we'd have tackled this project much sooner!"
